I'm not a sports fan - got this book out of curiosity (disclosure - friend connection) - but this book hits my interests, actually relates as much to Zen and the practice of conflict resolution as it does to sport. Any sport. It strikes me that basketball, which is an obvious passion of the author, is an excuse for this man to write about interpersonal relating, and not only that, but emotional, feeling-full, relating. I'd almost recommend this as a marriage counselling manual. Or as an adjunct anyway. Anyway, this is a very human view of athletics, a push for compassion in lifestyle.

I have spent a coaching lifetime in southern Ohio and have grown professionally watching Coach Burson's Muskingum College teams, listening to him at coaching clinics, observing his practices and seeking his counsel for over 40 years. I anxiously awaited the release of this book, and have not been disappointed. Dr. Burson's story, uniquely written, presents deep questions of beginning and experienced coaches alike in the formation of core values that will maximize a coach's influence on student-athletes. However, this book cuts to the heart issues of a coach, challenges him to see and do the right things for the right reasons, and grow personally as well as professionally from the experience of truly pursuing excellence. In a "style over substance" culture, this book has weighty subject matter for thought and reflection. I always recommend three "must read" books to basketball coaches serious about the profession: "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, "A Season With Dick Bennett" by Eric Ferris, and "The Score Takes Care of Itself" by Bill Walsh. This book must be added to the list. "The Golden Whistle" is a gift to the coaching profession.

As a coach this was a great read. I truly believe this should be required reading for all coaches. The message in the book is fantastic and can be related to relationships between coaches and players or managers and employees. It was an enjoyable read.

If you are a coach or just a person in a leadership role, this is a must read. The 10 nuggets this book breaks down basketball coaching into are very well thought out and delivered. It was a quick and east read that I reread just to help myself receive the message. As a young and new coach to the profession this book has helped me get motivated and be ready for the many pitfalls that lay ahead of me in my career.Give this book a try, you will not regret it.

Being a young coach myself I have read numerous books on coaching and leadership but I can honestly say that this is the best I've ever read. There are so many aspects of this book that I can easily relate to as a coach and I am sure many other coaches like myself would say the same. It truly is a MUST READ for all coaches of all sports in particularly basketball coaches as it lays a solid foundation towards coaching success.Coach Burson has made all of us a better coach and teacher with his wonderful work and by providing us with this valuable resource on basketball as well as life.

I would highly recommend "The Golden Whistle" to individuals in any job or profession. Coach Burson goes beyond the X's and O's of coaching by identifying and defining his "golden nuggets". These "nuggets" serve as a meaningful common sense approach to communicating and dealing with others. "The Golden Whistle" is also the kind of book that can be re-read and studied over time. This book is a valuable resource tool for all, but it should be required reading for those beginning their career, whether it is coaching or not.

One of the best books I have ever read on coaching and leadership. Jim Burson gives great thoughts and tools for leaders to combine high expectations, hard work, empathy, a positive attitude and patience. There are thought-provoking questions and action steps to answer at the end of each key nugget to help implement these tools into your toolkit.Thank you Coach for creating such a wonderful resource!

Super book on how to coach correctly and how to make an impact in the lives of those you coach! Lot's of nuggets that will help you to become a better person and coach!Fantastic!
